Lost stools are, of course, the main indicator of diarrhoea. Diarrhoea can also be accompanied by vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, lethargy and other symptoms of the disease.
immediate care for dog's diarrhoea
If your dog is very young, very old, if he already has a health problem, call your veterinarian to find out how to manage diarrhoea. These people can be severely affected even when they have relatively mild diarrhoea. Also, call your veterinarian if the dog's diarrhoea is frequent and very fluid; contains more than just a blood chain; is dark and gloomy; or if your dog vomits violently, is dull, depressed and has pain. These can be signs of potentially serious health problems.
But if your dog is a healthy adult, it is reasonable to try home treatment.
for dogs that only have diarrhoea:
- Make sure the dog has plenty of clean water to prevent dehydration. Encourage the dog to drink. If necessary, offer to dilute chicken, beef broth or Pedialyte in addition to water.
- Give the dog a small meal with boiled white meat chicken (no bone or skin) and white rice. This can be the dog's diet until the consequence on the stool becomes normal again.
- If diarrhoea persists for more than 24 hours, or if your dog's condition gets worse at any time, contact your vet immediately.
For dogs with diarrhoea who have vomited once or twice:
- remove all foods for 12 hours.
- To avoid dehydration, give the dog small amounts of water often throughout the day. If necessary, you can also offer diluted chicken or beef soup or Pedialyte in addition to water.
- When the dog does not vomit for at least six hours, you can offer him a small amount of boiled white meat (no bone or skin) and white rice.
- Wait two hours. If the dog has not vomited, offer another small meal consisting of boiled chicken and rice.
- Continue this treatment by gradually increasing the amount of food available at each meal and lengthening the time between meals until stool consistency returns to normal.
- If diarrhoea persists for more than 24 hours or if your dog's condition gets worse at any time, contact your doctor immediately.
