The four "silent" killers in cats 1.

Here are some simple recommendations to take care of your cat:
  • Maintain a safe environment (keep it indoors)
  • Feed high-quality foods (eg meat protein)
  • Consider preventive treatment (for example, annual physical examination, laboratory tests, and appropriate vaccines)
  • Give a lot of love and exercise
By following these basic tips, you can help keep your pet healthy - potentially for decades! But as a cat keeper, you should also be aware of four "silent" killers in cats. Knowing which are the most common silent killers, you can find out what clinical signs to look for. With most of these diseases, the faster the clinical signs are identified, the faster we can treat the animals.

1. Chronic kidney disease

Chronic renal failure (CKD) is one of the best silent killer in cats. This is sometimes called chronic renal failure or chronic kidney disease. These conditions are all semantically identical and basically mean that 75% of both kidneys are ineffective and do not work. The clinical signs of the MRC include:

  • Excessive consumption of drinks
  • Excessive urination More lumps in the litter
  • Weightloss
  • Bad breath (due to toxins that build up in the blood and cause damage to the mouth, esophagus and stomach)
  • Lethargy
  • Hiding
Fortunately, with good management, cats can live with chronic kidney disease for years (unlike dogs where chronic kidney disease goes faster). Chronic treatment may include a low-protein diet, frequent blood tests, increased water intake (with fountains or wrinkled canned food), medications, and liquids under the skin (as many caretakers do animals at home, once well trained).
