Anita Deloras Adams entered a negotiated plea of guilty to one count of aggravated cruelty to animals for an incident that occurred on May 24. According to Cherokee Judicial Circuit Senior Assistant District Attorney Sharon M. Fox, another individual residing with Adams obtained two cats to address a rodent problem at the home.
“Adams did not feel like the cats were doing what they should with the rodents, so she picked up one of the cats, wrung its neck and threw it over the fence,” Fox said. “Law enforcement was called, the victim was upset … they did speak to the defendant and she admitted that she wrung the cat’s neck and she killed it.”
Fox said Adams’ behavior when police arrived at the residence was disconcerting.
“Her demeanor at that point in time, in the State’s opinion, was comical and did not match the situation of what she had just done,” Fox continued. “She’s been in jail for little over a month and a half and that’s going to tailor into my ultimate recommendation on this case.”
The incident has drawn interest from outside of the local community. As of Friday afternoon, an online petition at Change.org demanding Adams be prosecuted for aggravated cruelty to animals has garnered more than 3,500 signatures
